An Introduction to Sony’s Wireless PSP Device

Sony is one of the most recognizable electronic brands in the world. Experiencing success in almost every new industry the company enters, Sony has recently sparked an entertainment revolution through the introduction of its wireless PSP gaming device. Although there have been other wireless gaming devices to hit the market, namely the Nintendo Gameboy, Sega GameGear and, more recently, the Nintendo DS, the wireless PSP device from Sony is the most complete mobile entertainment device ever made. 

Wireless PSP Features

The Wireless PSP handheld device is a remarkably powerful entertainment medium considering that it weighs only 280 grams and measures 6.7” x 2.9”. Looking to capitalize on the success of the larger and more powerful PS2 unit, the PSP offers a wireless gaming solution for serious gamers and people who travel a lot and are looking for ways to fill the time. Although marketed as a wireless gaming device, the PSP is more of a wireless media device. The three main functions of the wireless PSP include:

  • Wireless PSP gaming: A wide variety of game titles (over 40 of them) let you get into the action from anywhere, at any time.

  • Wireless PSP video: Sony is currently in the process of rolling out a slew of movie titles that PSP owners can purchase, download and view on the HD compatible LCD color screen. Some of the titles that have already been released include Spiderman 2, Once Upon a Time in Mexico and Resident Evil.

  • Wireless PSP audio: The PSP is also designed to function as a portable music player. Although it doesn’t have the storage capacity of iPod’s 40+ GB, the dual-speaker system will only improve with time.

In addition to the three main function features, there are a number of other smaller features associated with the wireless PSP that are worth noting. Some of these additional features include:

  • The wireless PSP is WiFi (Wireless Fidelity) capable, meaning that gamers can log onto a PSP online network and take each other on. The WiFi compatibility will undoubtedly be compatible with both the audio and video components of the PSP also.
  • The wireless PSP device has 32 MB of main memory in addition to 4 MB of embedded DRAM.
  • A USB connection makes it possible to connect the PSP with any USB port.
  • A memory stick duo slot allows for additional storage space for music, saved games, etc.
