Patch, Firewall and Antivirus Protection Information

Below is a list of the different methods of keeping your computer and your network secure.  We recommend using them all together, if possible.  Along with the definitions, we have included some good sites to look up more information about them and to find the right programs or devices for you.

Patch: a program that can be downloaded and is issued, as needed, to fix software bugs and incompatibilities with existing and new products.

Firewall:

  1. Personal (or software) - monitors the computer for suspicious activity while online.
  2. Network - computers on a network use this separate device to create a barrier between their computers and the Internet. (This form of a firewall is more expensive than personal software).

Antivirus software: programs you can buy or download to prevent computer viruses from destroying your system.  Some antivirus programs can also be used for repairing existing problems.  It is a good idea to keep it updated.
