An Introductory Guide to the Google Video Viewer

About Google

The Google search engine has become the premier navigation service associated with the Internet. Although the Google site served primarily as a search engine for a long period of time, its great success has opened the door for them to expand into other types of online arenas just like competitor Yahoo once did.

Google currently offers a toolbar service that is compatible with various Internet browsers like Internet Explorer and they are in the process of testing out a new free e-mail service and free Web accelerator that is designed to provide a speed boost to broadband-compatible systems. Some of Google’s older services include a premier news service that is tied in to its extensive search engine capabilities, a graphical mapping service that is unlike any other on the Internet, a state of the art language translator, shopping sections, customized alerts and more.

The Google Video Viewer

The Google search engine has always had video capabilities. If you searched for ‘sports’ and chose a video search, the results returned would all be in video format. Tabs located above the search window allow you to select the type of results you are hoping to get. This could include:

  • Standard Web results (default)
  • Image results
  • Froogle (shopping) results
  • Local results (based on your location)
  • News results
  • Video results

Google is currently in the process of testing out a beta version of the Google Video Viewer, a stand-alone search engine that is designed to serve the broadband community by returning results that are in video format. In this way, it’s not unlike the old video service; however, this stand-alone search engine boasts more detailed results and additional video search options, such as selecting whether or not you want all videos or simply playable videos.

Google Video Viewer Features

The Google Video Viewer is different than the original method of video searching available through the Google search engine in that it returns entire programs instead of snippets of videos. Televised content that has been made available online is accessible through the Google Video Viewer, such as news programs, public broadcasting, special entertainment, sports highlights, etc.

The Google Video Viewer database is extensive; however, all videos are not free. There are a number of free video results that will be returned in addition to a large number of video links that cost money or are a part of some type of Web TV service.

Some of the popular and common TV channels that you can search for video content from include:

  • ABC
  • NBC
  • CNN
  • KRON
  • Fox News
  • Food Network
  • PBS
  • CSPAN and CSPAN 2
  • Travel Channel
  • Animal Planet
  • Discovery Channel

The aforementioned channels reflect only a portion of what’s available through the Google Video Viewer service. Log on at http://video.google.com/ today and search for all types of video content.
