Most of us would enjoy being able to e-mail friends and family while we travel, and being able to do so from a hotel is very convenient. More and more hotels are offering Internet access to their guests every day, and for good reason – guests want and need to stay connected while they travel.

There are a number of ways you can access broadband Internet services in hotels.

Broadband Internet in Hotels – Using Hotel Computers

Those of us who don’t want to carry a laptop with us when we travel can still access the Internet in a hotel by using the computers the hotel provides. Some hotels provide computers in the lobby area for guests, and other hotels dedicate a whole room with computers which can be used for checking e-mail and surfing the Internet, etc. While these computers mean that you don’t have to bring your laptop with you on vacation, there are some things to think about.

First, there is usually a time limit imposed upon usage so that other guests can use the computers as well. Also, some hotels charge for using the Internet services and this can be expensive. Finally, most hotels that have computer rooms open the rooms for only certain hours; say from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. This means that you won’t be able to check your e-mail whenever you want to.

Broadband Internet in Hotels – WiFi Connections

If you do have a laptop that is configured for wireless computing, it might be worth the trouble to bring it. Hotels that offer WiFi connections offer the connections in the lobby areas and sometimes the rooms as well. You’ll want to ask the hotel if the service is free, and if not, then how much they charge for connecting to the Internet. Some hotels charge by the day, while others charge by the hour. If your hotel charges too much for Internet access, then you might want to investigate nearby Internet cafes.

If your hotel does offer wireless Internet services in your hotel room, then they will provide detailed instructions to help you connect to the Internet. In most cases, connection should only take a matter of minutes.

Broadband Internet in Hotels – Wired Connections

If your hotel does not provide wireless access in the room, they might still provide wired access. Most hotels provide the necessary cables you’ll need to get online, but it’s still a good idea to bring your own Ethernet or USB cables, just in case.

Before choosing a hotel that provides Internet access, make sure to ask about the technical assistance they provide. Internet access is no good if you can’t get it up and working on your computer!
