Live Broadband TV

A Brief Look at Live Broadband TV: Sports on Broadband

Broadband TV is rapidly becoming one of the most popular broadband related technologies in addition to broadband telephony. There are two main types of broadband TV - the kind that connects to your computer, and the kind that connects to your television. Broadband TV (or IP TV) that connects to your television or entertainment system is the newest type of broadband Internet TV that is gaining popularity amongst high speed Internet users.

Broadband Internet TV and Your Computer

Broadband TV has been available via one’s computer for a long time now. For the most part, the TV is not live, but pre-recorded shows, clips or videos designed for use with high speed broadband Internet connections.

This can be for promotional purposes, or simply through member sites that allow you to watch episodes of a television show online. An example of broadband Internet TV being used for promotional purposes comes from Comedy Central’s newest show, Stella. In an effort to draw viewers into the series, Comedy Central made the first episode of the highly anticipated show available in its entirety through the Stella Web site hosted by Comedy Central. Viewers were able to log on and watch the show for free, using the power of broadband.

Sports on Broadband

Another example of standard broadband Internet TV is in the form of sports. Popular sports shows such as ESPN and Fox Sports have made segments of their programming available online for viewers to watch using a broadband Internet connection. You can watch the highlights from your favorite sports team’s latest victory, catch up on the latest sports news, or, in some cases, even purchase a season pass and actually watch live broadband TV feeds of your favorite team(s) in action.

Sky Sports, a popular European sports network and America Online have recently teamed up to allow AOL Gold and Platinum members to receive access to various types of broadband TV content available through the Sky Sports channels. This includes sports highlights, interviews, news and video alerts related to your favorite sports teams from around the globe. The same service can be purchased directly from the Sky Sports Web site.

Live broadband Internet TV is a newer phenomenon that is not as popular yet because it usually costs money in the form of a subscription fee. The recent Live 8 concerts were streamed live for broadband courtesy of America Online, which allowed users to watch the entirety of any of the concerts from the comfort of their own home. Live broadband TV goes hand in hand with the newer forms of broadband TV that connect via a programming box to your television.

Functioning in very much the same way as standard digital cable boxes, broadband TV boxes differ in the fact that they connect to your broadband modem as opposed to a series of coaxial cable lines.
