Microsoft Netmeeting: Free NetMeeting Download
What is NetMeeting?
NetMeeting is a product developed by Microsoft that allows users to hold face-to-face conversations with friends and family as well as collaborate and hold meetings with co-workers from all over the world. Essentially, it enables groups of people to conduct virtual meetings using the Internet as a transmission medium. NetMeeting requires a broadband Internet connection for the majority of the program’s functions to work properly. A dial-up connection can be used for some of the functions, but a broadband connection will be much faster and much easier to use. NetMeeting software can be easily downloaded from the Internet, and it also automatically comes with Windows 2000.
Things You Can Do With NetMeeting
NetMeeting supports VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), chat sessions, a whiteboard, and application sharing. It is built into Microsoft’s Internet Explorer Web Browser. The most recent edition of NetMeeting is NetMeeting 3, which has a number of exciting features, some of which are described below.
Chat
- Users can type text messages in order to communicate with other people during a conference.
- Virtually "chat" with one person or a group of people across multiple computers.
- Use "Whisper" mode in order to send private messages to another person during an organized group Chat session.
Internet Directory
- The Internet Directory can be easily viewed from a Web page, and a list of people currently present in a NetMeeting can be seen.
- With the click of a button, one or more of the people listed in the directory can be connected simply by typing in their location information.
File Transfer
- Send the file to everyone in the conference, or to one or more selected participants.
- Accept or reject transferred files.
Application Sharing
- Applications can be shared and not shared, depending on the users’preferences. Frames make it easy to tell which applications are being shared and which are local.
- Programs can be easily and quickly switched between using the program taskbar, which is shared among participants.
- Monitor which people can work in the shared program. Approve and deny participant requests to work in the program you introduce.
Whiteboard
- This useful tool is analogous to a virtual chalkboard. It allows you to review, create and update graphic information.
- Contents can be easily added to or deleted from the chalkboard by dragging and dropping information with the mouse.
- Cut, copy and paste information from any Windows-based application into the Whiteboard.
- Load saved Whiteboard pages, enabling you to prepare information before a conference, then drag and drop it into the Whiteboard during a meeting.
How to Use NetMeeting with Others
It’s easy! Just click the icon on your computer, and make sure everyone else you want to interact with via the NetMeeting has also activated the program. Then, simply follow the instructions for how to text message or call participants.
