Business Wireless Services

Many businesses have discovered the convenience, as well as the necessity, of wireless networks and the different hardware components this requires. Here’s a rundown of information on business routers, modems, and networking solutions for small and medium businesses.

Wireless Networks for Small Businesses

Most small businesses connect to the Internet using a cable modem from a local phone company or cable provider. The cable modem can then connect to a wireless router in order to link two or more computers or devices together in a local area network (LAN). A LAN enables computers to access data from one another, print on different network computers, and connect other wireless devices.

Business Routers

A router is a necessary component to any small business network. Generally, a router lets you connect four to five devices (you can add more with an Ethernet switch) and provides firewall protection for your network.  The firewall monitors Internet traffic and blocks viruses, spyware, malware, and hackers from infiltrating your network and damaging your company data.

When choosing a router for your company, you might consider 802.11g technology which offers stronger firewall and threat-management features than 802.11n counterparts. An 802.11n router offers faster speeds which are great for home networks, but fewer business-oriented options to keep your business data secure.

Beyond price, businesses should look for router manufacturers that offer exceptional service and support after the purchase. Large companies like Dell, Cisco, and IBM now devote substantial customer service to companies with fewer than 250 employees.

Business Cable Modems

Small businesses can opt to use the cable modem supplied by their ISP, but many are choosing to purchase their own cable modem device and save on monthly rental fees.  Probably the best choice available today when it comes to buying a cable modem is a device that includes DOCSIS 3.0 technology. DOCSIS 3.0 modems can access the Internet at speeds as fast as 100-200 Mbps, and Comcast, Charter, Time Warner, and other cable companies are already offering high-speed Internet connections – based on DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem technology – as fast as 60 Mbps for downstream speeds.

Popular DOCSIS 3.0 cable modems include Motorola’s SURFboard 6120, Ambit’s U10C035, and Cisco’s DPC3000.
