Broadband Internet Information

The most common high-speed Internet connection is called broadband.  The term broadband refers to three separate types of connections; DSL, cable and satellite.  What they have in common is that they are all high-speed connections and they provide the customer with “always online” service.

DSL vs. Cable Internet

Broadband DSL and cable go one step further in their comparison.  When comparing DSL vs. cable broadband, remember that both of these connections use existing telephone or cable lines that are already running into your home, to bring the Internet at a super high speed.

DSL and cable modems work through a wire that holds information in its bandwidth.  This is the same wire or line that allows phone calls to go through and programming to appear on your TV screen.  Uploads and downloads share that space without affecting the performance of your phone or TV.

Satellite Internet

Broadband satellite connections are set up with a transmitting station that shoots information to a receiving station, with both stations located on land.  The orbiting satellite is able to give customers in rural areas a better connection than they might receive from their phone or cable company, especially if those connections are distance sensitive.

The Broadband That's Right for You

When figuring out which kind of broadband connection is the best for you, take into account where you live in regards to the central office of your phone or cable company.  For rural customers, satellite and cable are the best bets.  DSL can be distance sensitive, while satellite is not at all and cable is only distance sensitive to some extent.  For urban dwellers, DSL is a smart choice because the customer will have their own subscriber line, instead of sharing bandwidth like cable subscribers.  A broadband cable connection is a reliable and efficient choice in almost all situations and they have a slight performance advantage over DSL connections.
