The main purpose of a router is to connect more than one computer to the Internet at any given time. There are many different types of routers available on the market today. There are basic routers that will simply connect multiple computers to the Internet at the same time, there are wireless routers and there are routers with extra features, such as firewalls, other security elements, and built-in modems.
Hard Wire Routers
Typically, these are basic routers that offer between four and eight LAN ports for computer hook up, which means that the amount of LAN ports available will determine how many computers can be connected to the Internet at the same time. Other desired features that many routers come with include dual dial up and broadband capabilities, firewalls and other security features, high speeds, built-in modems and warranties.
Wireless Routers
Wireless routers allow computers with wireless capabilities, such as a wireless card, the opportunity to connect to the Internet without being physically “connected.” These routers offer a lot of flexibility because most of them also offer the option of being connected to the Internet through a hard wire. So you can switch from hard wire to wireless depending on your preference.
Wireless routers also have features that vary; however, they all offer multiple computers a broadband Internet connection without the hassle of wires. Some incorporate faster speeds, using the 802.11 series of standards. The 802.11a and 802.11g technologies support 54 Mbps of bandwidth and runs faster than the 802.11b standard, which only supports 11Mbps bandwidth. Some wireless routers also incorporate firewalls, other security components, and built-in modems for extra efficiency.
