What is a Wireless Router?

Wireless routers are an alternative to hard wired routers.  They allow computers with wireless cards, most commonly laptops, the ability to be connected to the Internet without the constraint of a wire.  Wireless routers also allow multiple users to be connected at the same time.

The Benefits of Wireless Routers

One great thing about using a wireless router is that they offer the option of being connected to the Internet through a hard wire or through a wireless connection.  The option of being able to use either connection gives users much needed flexibility.

Most people love wireless routers because they have the chance to move around their homes.  They can be connected to the Internet without restraint to a certain room and without having to worry about the length of a wire.  Sometimes a wireless connection can even reach outside, such as a yard, or to a neighbor’s place.  So if you are working on a laptop, you can work wherever you want!

The Downfalls of Wireless Routers

There is a lot of talk about how wireless routers are unsafe.  The truth is, wireless routers with proper security features are safe, just not quite as safe as a hard wired router.  Because it is easier to tap into a wireless connection, people with the appropriate knowledge could have the ability of tapping into your computer.  You can avoid this by setting up certain security features on your wireless network.  Firewalls, firmware, and other virus scanners are also very important to use with a wireless router to ensure your own protection.

Wireless Routers Available

There are many types of wireless routers available today.  The most popular wireless routers are ones with built in DSL or cable modems.  The ultra-fast 802.11g wireless routers that offer more bandwidth support are new and becoming common in homes and businesses.  There are several companies that make these products, including D-Link, Netgear, Linksys, Microsoft and SMC.
