Bridged DSL vs. Routed DSL

For some of our readers that may have questions about their DSL connections and networks, we have a brief explanation of the difference between a bridged DSL and a routed DSL connection.

Bridged DSL

Bridged DSL works to connect your computer or your entire local network directly to your Internet service provider.  The bridge holds the ability to pass data from one side of the bridge to the other.  The problem is, sometimes the data that is being passed is incorrect or ends up in the wrong place.  For this reason, bridged DSL can get confusing and bothersome.

Smaller bridged DSL networks are relatively easy to set up.  However, once the network grows, bandwidth gets wasted and noise, traffic, and storm levels can rise.  Noise refers to extra packets of data that are not being used by you, and it tends to interfere with a bridged DSL connection.  Traffic and storms also steal bandwidth and slow down a bridged DSL connection - causing an interruption in communication efforts.

Some companies offer enhanced bridged DSL services, where upstream and downstream speeds are higher than regular bridged DSL speeds and more IP addresses are given to customers.

Routed DSL

Routed DSL works through the use of routers.  One router is positioned at the computer’s end and the other router is placed at the Internet service provider’s end of the network.  The two routers communicate and pass information between one another.

The security of routed DSL is superior and more reliable than that of bridged DSL.  It is more difficult for intruders to break into the routed DSL line.  And interference levels from noise, traffic, and storms are limited with routed DSL.  However, sometimes routed DSL can be difficult to find.  The service is typically only offered only through Business DSL packages, which always offer superior features, but you will pay for these features in the elevated prices.
