DSL Availability: How to Find Local High Speed Internet Access Providers |
|
DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) is a type of high-speed broadband Internet connection. When you are using a DSL connection, your phone line is shared, with part of it supporting your phone conversations and the other part supporting your Internet data transfers and requests. Unlike a cable connection, a DSL connection works better the closer you are to the provider’s office. If you are only a short distance away, chances are you will have a very strong and fast connection. If you are good distance away from the office, however, you might find your DSL connection to be somewhat slow and choppy. All of this stems from the fact that where cable modem technology delivers shared bandwidth within a local neighborhood, DSL delivers dedicated local bandwidth. In other words, cable users have to be concerned about how many cable subscribers are actively using the network in a certain neighborhood, DSL subscribers need to only worry about how far they are from the main office. DSL subscribers do not have to worry as much about the amount of Internet traffic during peak periods, an issue that causes problems for some cable subscribers. DSL availability tends to be less common in rural areas, as the quality of the connection deteriorates very quickly when the distance between the provider and the user starts to exceed three miles. Since not everyone is close enough to a provider’s main office, not everyone can get high-quality DSL service, or any DSL service at all. For these customers, a cable connection is an excellent option. Can You Get DSL?The easiest way to tell if you’re eligible for DSL service is to visit various DSL provider Web sites. Almost all of these Web sites have dedicated a special “Can I Get Service?” section that allows you to type in your phone number and address. The program then tells you whether or not you are eligible for their services, and in some cases, even suggests a different company to try. Try some of the provider’s links below to see if you’re eligible for DSL service. Once you know you’re eligible for DSL service, you can find out more information about the different types of packages individual companies may offer.
You can also try typing “DSL availability” into a search engine and browsing through the results. If you’re not currently eligible for DSL service, don’t give up on a high-speed Internet connection! Cable and satellite are still very viable options for you, and they can provide you with service that is just as good as, if not better than DSL. Related Articles: |
