Introduction to Fiber TechnologyFiber optics technology is used by many telecommunications companies to transmit telephone, Internet, and cable television signals. Modern fiber-optic communication systems generally include an optical transmitter to convert an electrical signal into an optical signal to send into the optical fiber. The information transmitted is typically digital information generated by computers, telephone systems, and cable television companies. Two DSL providers, AT&T and Verizon, operate on fiber technology. Verizon FiOS Fiber TechnologyVerizon FiOS is a communications service, operating over a fiber-optic communications network, that is presently offered in some areas of the United States by Verizon. Verizon FiOS features FiOS TV, FiOS Digital Voice, and Internet service that can be bundled together. Although FiOS allows for quick browsing/download speeds, the price is usually the highest in the market. AT&T U-Verse Fiber TechnologyU-verse is a VDSL service operated by AT&T. VDSL is a DSL technology that provides a fast data transmission over a single flat untwisted or twisted pair of copper wires. These fast speeds mean that VDSL is capable of supporting high bandwidth services such as HDTV, as well as Voice over IP and general Internet access all over a single connection. AT&T provides their U-verse services primarily through fiber-to-the-node and recently fiber-to-the-premises. AT&T's U-Verse technology features U-Verse TV, Internet, and Voice products that can be bundled together. AT&T U-Verse services rival the fastest DSL products available today. |
