Nintendo Revolution Game System Preview

Print

Visitors of the 2005 E3 Expo at the Los Angeles Convention Center were given a chance to get a preview of the next generation of gaming systems, most notably: Sony’s PlayStation 3, Microsoft’s Xbox 360, and of course, Nintendo’s Revolution system.

After receiving limited success with the GameCube, Nintendo is back at it again, this time with the Nintendo Revolution, a game system that Nintendo hopes will win them back some of the older-generation gamers who have been snatched up by the likes of PlayStation and Xbox.

Nintendo Revolution Game System Preview

One of the most exciting features of the Nintendo Revolution game system (and one that distinguishes it from its GameCube predecessor) is that it will be capable of playing DVDs. The GameCube system uses mini-discs, as opposed to both Xbox and PlayStation, which are DVD capable.

Of the three new game systems to hit the market, Nintendo Revolution is expected to be the last, with an estimated release date of late 2006. Because of this, Nintendo’s previews have not been as descriptive as those of PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360.

Nintendo Revolution and Broadband

As opposed to the Nintendo GameCube, Nintendo Revolution is expected to be online capable. Nintendo Revolution game system previews have indicated that they are embracing the wireless age and introducing a broadband Wi-Fi capability that has not yet been seen in a game system. Nintendo Revolution owners will be able to access a Nintendo network where they can play games against other Nintendo owners located anywhere in the world.

Nintendo Revolution online will allow users to log on and download all sorts of games dating all the way back to the original NES game system. It is expected that Nintendo enthusiasts will be able to play every NES, Super NES and N-64 game that was ever released.

Although the Nintendo Revolution units themselves will be Wi-Fi capable, users will still require an active Wi-Fi broadband connection, through which they can receive the necessary wireless signal.

Preview Nintendo Revolution Game System

Nintendo is not expecting to release their Revolution game system until late 2006, so at this point, there is not a great deal that is absolute in terms of the physical specs of the Revolution game system. Here is what we do know:

  • Will more than likely be available in different colors allowing for a more customizable game system.
  • Expected to connect to the Internet via a wireless broadband connection. (802.11b and 802.11g)
  • Storage capacity likely to include slots for multiple 512 MB flash memory cards.
  • Multiple 2.0 USB ports on the rear of the game system.
  • Backward capable: Nintendo Revolution will be compatible with Nintendo GameCube’s mini-discs, allowing GameCube owners to upgrade.

What is PSP Firmware?

Print

PSP firmware is the software that runs the PSP, or Play Station Portable.  There are several different versions of PSP firmware.  The most updated is PSP V2.0, which has just become available for download.  Other relatively current versions of PSP firmware include V1.5, V1.51, and V1.52.

How to the latest versions of PSP Firmware

If you have purchased a PSP system with the model number of PSP-1001, you are able to download the newest version of PSP firmware V2.0 online at http://www.us.playstation.com/PSP.aspx?id=softwareupdate.

How the New PSP Firmware V2.0 Will Help You

The new V2.0 for PSP firmware will update your PSP system by adding Internet Settings, video features, music updates, photo elements, and new settings.

  • New Internet Settings for the PSP Firmware:  Now you can use PSP’s very own Internet browser.
  • New Video Features for the PSP Firmware:  New 4:3 screen mode, A-B repeat feature, audio preferences, and MP4 as playable file formats.
  • New Music Updates for the PSP Firmware:  MP4 and WAV can now be added as playable files.  Additionally, if you have SonicStage V2.0 and PSP V2.0, you can now transfer music from ATRAC3 formats to a memory stick.
  • New Photo Elements for the PSP Firmware:  Wallpaper options, image transfers, and various image formats have been added to the system for viewing purposes.
  • New Settings for the PSP Firmware:  TheKorean language, theme settings, security features and modes, and a new Web address shortcut feature have been added.

Disadvantages of PSP Firmware V2.0

Some say that the newest version of PSP Firmware will not be wanted on systems that currently hold V1.5.  The reason is because V2.0 may harm the current system’s homebrew capabilities in the version 1.5.  Most other versions of the PSP firmware do not have homebrew abilities, so they will not be affected negatively by the upgrade.

An Introduction to Sony’s Wireless PSP Device

Sony is one of the most recognizable electronic brands in the world. Experiencing success in almost every new industry the company enters, Sony has recently sparked an entertainment revolution through the introduction of its wireless PSP gaming device. Although there have been other wireless gaming devices to hit the market, namely the Nintendo Gameboy, Sega GameGear and, more recently, the Nintendo DS, the wireless PSP device from Sony is the most complete mobile entertainment device ever made.

Wireless PSP Features

The Wireless PSP handheld device is a remarkably powerful entertainment medium considering that it weighs only 280 grams and measures 6.7” x 2.9”. Looking to capitalize on the success of the larger and more powerful PS2 unit, the PSP offers a wireless gaming solution for serious gamers and people who travel a lot and are looking for ways to fill the time. Although marketed as a wireless gaming device, the PSP is more of a wireless media device. The three main functions of the wireless PSP include:

  • Wireless PSP gaming: A wide variety of game titles (over 40 of them) let you get into the action from anywhere, at any time.
  • Wireless PSP video: Sony is currently in the process of rolling out a slew of movie titles that PSP owners can purchase, download and view on the HD compatible LCD color screen. Some of the titles that have already been released include Spiderman 2, Once Upon a Time in Mexico and Resident Evil.
  • Wireless PSP audio: The PSP is also designed to function as a portable music player. Although it doesn’t have the storage capacity of iPod’s 40+ GB, the dual-speaker system will only improve with time.

In addition to the three main function features, there are a number of other smaller features associated with the wireless PSP that are worth noting. Some of these additional features include:

  • The wireless PSP is WiFi (Wireless Fidelity) capable, meaning that gamers can log onto a PSP online network and take each other on. The WiFi compatibility will undoubtedly be compatible with both the audio and video components of the PSP also.
  • The wireless PSP device has 32 MB of main memory in addition to 4 MB of embedded DRAM.
  • A USB connection makes it possible to connect the PSP with any USB port.
  • A memory stick duo slot allows for additional storage space for music, saved games, etc.
