Nintendo DS Handheld Leads Portable Gaming Devices with Wireless Internet Connectivity |
|
|
There
is no doubt that video game culture and technology is changing; a new
focus on head-to-head competition over the Internet is emerging in the
gaming industry. The Nintendo DS Handheld is a perfect example of this
trend, and the device has the added twist of being light, portable and
compatible with any high speed wireless network.
Nintendo has sold more than 10 million units of the DS Handheld, 4
million of which were sold in the United States. 5 million devices have
been sold in Japan since its launch in December 2004, making it the
fastest-selling video game machine in Japanese history. Together with
the Nintendo Game Boy Advance, Nintendo now holds 78% of the mobile
gaming market in the U.S.
Portable Video Games Online: Wi-Fi Connectivity and Handheld Gaming Devices
What truly makes the Nintendo DS Handheld unique, and mostly likely
contributes to its impressive popularity, is the portable gaming
device’s compatibility with wi-fi Internet networks. This allows
Nintendo DS users to go online and participate in head-to-head
competitions on light, portable hand-held devices anywhere a wireless
network can be found.
Seven weeks after launching the online service, Nintendo reports
that 10 million connections have been made with 550,000 unique visitors
logging in. Partially because of its handheld gaming device product
line and focus on gaming through wireless connections, Nintendo has
seen stronger growth in 2005 than both of its major rivals in the
gaming industry, Sony and Microsoft.
This explosive growth is in keeping with the latest gaming trend
championed by Microsoft with the Xbox 360, which is turning gaming
consoles into digital entertainment centers with expanded functionality
and a focus on online networking.
Nintendo has announced that its new console will include some form
of “expanded functionality” the company has not yet elaborated on. In
the meantime, the Nintendo DS Handheld is leading the way into a new
generation of gaming consoles focused on competing over high speed
Internet connections. Handheld gaming enthusiasts are jumping at the
chance to be part of this revolution in technology and gamer culture,
which is part of the reason the Nintendo DS Handheld has enjoyed such
success both in the United States and abroad.
Nintendo DS Handheld and Your Wireless Broadband Internet Connection
In the gaming arena, speed and reaction time are keys to victory
over your opponent, and online gaming using the Nintendo DS handheld is
no exception.
Because the portable device relies heavily on wireless Internet
networks for its unique function of allowing users to play online from
anywhere, it is important to invest in a high speed Internet connection
to ensure a competitive edge. A home wireless network would also be
advantageous, so you no longer have to sit glued to your console or
computer to game online.
A fast, wireless connection is the best bet for getting the most fun
out of your Nintendo DS Handheld, and remaining competitive while being
matched head-to-head against other online gamers. |

An Introduction To Nintendo Gaming |

Introduction to Nintendo Gaming
One of the oldest and most recognizable brand names in video game
entertainment, Nintendo Co. Ltd. of Kyoto, Japan is also one of the
most lucrative and successful. The Nintendo brand name dates all the
way back to 1889 and the introduction of “Hanafuda” playing cards. From
its meager beginnings, Nintendo grew to become the largest company in
the business producing best selling video game hits like Super Mario
Brothers, Donkey Kong, The Legend of Zelda and even Pokemon. Ask almost
any video gamer today where he/she got her start, and the answer will
probably be Nintendo.
Nintendo Gaming Systems
Nintendo offers a plethora of gaming systems to choose from. The
progression of Nintendo gaming systems from earliest to latest is as
follows:
- Nintendo ES
- Super Nintendo ES
- Nintendo 64
- Nintendo GameCube
- Nintendo Revolution (soon to be released 2006)
Handheld platforms of Nintendo’s gaming systems include:
- Nintendo GameBoy
- Nintendo GameBoy Advance

Nintendo saw a brief lull in sales in between the release of the
Nintendo 64 gaming unit and the Nintendo GameCube unit due to the
heaviest amount of competition the gaming industry had ever seen
through the likes of Sony PlayStation / PlayStation 2 and Microsoft
Xbox. As it is, Nintendo is back among the elite gaming system
producers and looks to challenge both Microsoft and Sony in the coming
year with the release of their newest and most advanced gaming system

MMORPG: Your Broadband Home Away from Home |
|
What is MMORPG?
The term MMORPG stands for a dominant genre of online gaming,
Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game. Instead of merely
playing a game over the Internet with others, you live and grow in an
alternate world open for you to explore. While MMORPGs have been
around for many years - the earliest ones predating Windows - they have
just recently emerged into their Golden Age. Recent powerhouse titles
such as Blizzard’s “World of Warcraft” and Sony Online’s “Everquest 2”
have brought this exciting style of game to the masses.
When you first start playing, you typically choose a “server” to
create your character on. Each server is separate and identical to
each other, so if you have friends who already play, or have friends
who start after you, you will want to make sure to choose the same
server. Once your character is created, there are a wealth of things
you can do, from participating in a player-driven economy, to questing
and doing good or ill, the choice is up to you.
Some games also have significant Player versus Player (or PvP)
elements, where strategic and fast-paced battles take place with other
people just like you. The depth and focus in each of these areas
varies from game to game, as does the setting. Whether flying
spaceships or medieval battles are your style, you can find your niche
in one of these games.
So what do you need in order to get connected and start playing?
Most titles require a Windows PC, although “World of Warcraft” is a very notable exception that runs on Mac platforms.
The second requirement is an Internet connection. While most will
run on a dial-up connection, the game is severely hampered by the low
transfer speed. For the true MMORPG experience, broadband Internet is
virtually a requirement, not a suggestion. Lastly, you will of course,
need to purchase the game itself, which usually runs around $50. The
first month is almost always free, and after this you will be charged
on average a $15 fee on a monthly basis to continue your subscription.
While at first you may not think this is worth it, you should
realize that the level of entertainment these games bring is far more
then your typical $50 game, and for less than the price of dinner and a
movie, you can play as much as you want for the whole month! |
