Popular Music File Formats

There is an abundance of different music file formats to choose from today.  Each music file format has different qualities and features, so you have options depending on what you are using the music files for.  If you are looking for a music file that will give you the very best sound quality, you will be choosing a different music file format then if you want to transport many files at once.  Following are the most commonly used music file formats:

MP3

MP3 is the most popular music file format around today.  People love MP3s because they work on Windows operating systems, and they are small files.  You can fit 12 MP3 files in the same space as you can fit one sound file in its original format, such as WAV.  MP3s allow many music files to be downloaded and stored without taking up too much space.

WAV

WAV is a commonly used music file format for digital recording.  WAV files are the largest music files around, making the audio quality superior to all other music file formats.  The downfall of WAV files is that they take up an enormous amount of space, making the storage and downloading of WAV music files difficult.

WMA

WMA is short for Windows Media Audio, a music file format that is similar in characteristics to MP3s.  WMAs are smaller in size than MP3s, while they still produce the same audio quality.

MIDI

MIDI is abbreviated for Music Instrument Digital Interface.  This music file format is commonly used for creating and playing synthesized music.  MIDI files are smaller in size, making them easy to use.

Choosing a Music File Format

If you are looking for music file formats that are condensed and small in size, you will want to choose the MP3 or the Windows Media Audio music file formats.  If sound quality is most important to you, then the WAV music file format will definitely be the best option.  If the ability to record music is necessary, you would want to choose the WAV or the MIDI music file formats.
