What is Podcasting?

If you have a broadband Internet connection, then you might already be familiar with one of the great joys of the Internet - podcasting. Podcasting is a term that comes from the iPod, made by Apple Incorporated. iPods are small, hand-held devices that allow users to download MP3s from the Internet and play the songs on the device. The iPod functions as a mobile music player that you can bring with you wherever you go.

“Podcasting” is making audio files (usually in the form of MP3s) available on the Web in such a way that it allows for software to automatically download the files for listening whenever a user wants to. Basically, it’s a radio show saved as an MP3 file! Podcasting actually no longer refers to Ipods, but to any software or hardware combination that allows for the downloading to take place. Podcasting is very difficult with dial-up connections because dial-up connections are much slower than broadband connections. To fully experience the fun and excitement of podcasting, a broadband Internet connection is necessary. However, you do not need an iPod or an MP3 player to listen to podcasts – the podcasts are downloaded directly onto you computer, so you can listen to them from there.
