Keeping Kids Safe Online
We are all concerned with making sure our computers are safe from
hackers and viruses and that our networks are impenetrable to nasty
bugs that wipe out files. Internet security is one of the most
important issues facing users today.
However, keeping your kids safe on the Internet is just as important
as keeping your files from being destroyed or your personal information
from being stolen.
Safety Matters
The Internet is one of the best research and education tools
available to our society today. People ages 4 to 104 can find helpful
tools for education, entertainment and work.
Unfortunately, along with fun or educational resources, comes
websites and chat rooms that are not fit for children. This material
has a way of getting out (usually in your junk mail folder!) and
children can be lured into unsafe situations or inappropriate material
with just a few clicks on the mouse.
You Can Help
Before you forbid your child from using the Internet altogether,
just remember that cyber safety is a lot like those first lessons you
teach children about regular safety.
- Don’t give your name or personal information to strangers - knowing
who your child’s friends are and knowing their screen names can help
parents monitor this.
- Don’t arrange for a face-to-face meeting with someone you
meet online. This is like telling your child not to get in a car with
a stranger.
- The Internet and television are very similar in that if
there is something offensive on the screen, it is possible to log off
or turn off the machine.
- Like all aspects of raising a child, being present and
attentive will take care of most problems before they happen, so pay
attention to what your child is doing online.
If you are still uncomfortable with inappropriate material even
making it to your child’s line of vision, many service providers now
have the option of parental controls. Check with yours to see what
kind of program they offer.
