According to Seniorjournal.com, the #1 online senior activity is “staying in touch” and the #2 senior online activity is keeping up-to-date on news and events.

Not far behind  #1 and #2 online activities for seniors, is researching health information, followed by research of products and services to purchase offline, research on stocks and investments, playing games, genealogy research, access to online discussions, chat rooms and e-Bay.

Interestingly, most of these senior online activities were self-taught.  Hey, our children don’t have to teach us, we got it, man!  On our own!  Most of our children are so busy with their own lives working 12 hour days and/or involved in their children’s activities, which is why we seniors have to make an appointment to see our very own children…at least two weeks in advance!

No, we’re not as helpless or as “lame,” as we appear.  We seniors are orchestrating our own online activities with our ingenuity.  So there!  You can even go so far as to say we are self-sufficient seniors pursuing our own interests online.  And these activities amongst us online seniors include: card games, board games, arcade games, casino games, dice games, word games, children’s games (beat the grandkids!), adventure games, sports games, role playing and strategy.  Many of these are free to download and some you can buy for a nominal fee.

Some sites even have a thought for the day:  “One’s friends are that part of the human race with which we can be human,” - George Santayana.

Online activities for seniors are seeing a lot of action from bored retirees looking for part-time or volunteer jobs.  Sometimes just looking at all the opportunities online, helps relieve senior boredom.

And how great the Internet is for online seniors who don’t like to drive, or maybe should not be driving, to go online to purchase (and have delivered) books, clothes, prescriptions and of course, gifts for the grandchildren…all of these are only a click away…. before they arrive on front porches.  And shopping for the holidays online….how heavenly (though not there yet) is it to never have to be caught in the chaotic holiday crowds.  Far, far away from the maddening crowds actually.  No driving around and around looking for a parking place; no wearily going from store to store searching for that perfect gift; no waiting in line to pay for it.  Not to mention no place to rest our weary bones.   All the more time seniors online have for their preferred activities….curled up in our favorite chair with our favorite books….both of which purchased online… and delivered right into our lap….with our senior discounts.  

And the greatest online activity for seniors is re-establishing contact with old high school and college friends and former co-workers…who we can commiserate with because we are no longer 25, 35, 45 and heaven forbid 55. 

Volunteer activities for seniors online broadens our search for the perfect setting… helping us realize the old adage “to give is to receive.”  At this stage in seniors’ lives, what is more important!
