What is WiFi?
WiFi, short for Wireless Fidelity, enables a person with a wireless-capable computer to access a high speed broadband network when within the coverage area of a given WiFi access point (hotspot). WiFi is the latest and greatest addition to the broadband family, giving more freedom than ever before to people looking to get high speed broadband Internet access.
Designed with the mobile device in mind, WiFi is primarily designed for cellular, laptop and PDA users who might like the ability to log onto a broadband network while on the go.
WiFi access points are springing up everywhere such as heavily populated centers like airports, libraries, cafes and even large cities. A number of these facilities charge for WiFi service, however, there are a growing number of venues where people can log onto WiFi networks for free.
WiFi VoIP Phone Service
The combination of WiFi services and VoIP phone technology represents the cutting edge of technological advancement. VoIP phone service is one of the new hot products that are associated with broadband Internet connectivity. Functioning in very much the same manner as standard telephony services, VoIP services simply use a broadband Internet network to receive and transmit calls as opposed to standard phone lines. Although VoIP phone services are just taking off within the home as an alternative to standard telephone plans, VoIP service is already spreading its wings and moving towards the future in the form of WiFi VoIP phone service options.
Zultys Technologies has recently announced their plans to launch a WiFi VoIP phone service in the form of their WIP 2 Wireless IP phone. The WiFi VoIP phone will have a similar signal range as its fixed counterpart and is expected to hit stores by November of 2005. The WiFi VoIP phone will be the first real competitor to challenge standard cellular phone networks for mobile telephony services.
The WiFi VoIP phone handset will be somewhat larger than the smaller cellular phone models of today in part because it will boast a battery life of up to 4 hours of talk time and 12 hours of standby time. Some of the noteworthy features associated with Zultys’ WiFi VoIP phone include:
- Call transferring
- Call holding
- DND
- 3-way conference calling
- 2 call appearances

- Instant messaging
- Online capable
Zultys market includes the United States, the United Kingdom and certain regions throughout Eastern Europe. However, the company seems poised for advancement in accordance with the success of their WiFi VoIP phone products.
