Sounds Cards: What Are They?

What are Sound Cards?

Sound cards improve the sound quality on computers dramatically.  Before the existence of sound cards, computer audio was limited in audio capabilities.  The only sound computers could produce was a simple beep.  Today, sound cards give amazing audio capabilities to computers.  Sound cards make listening to music and audio easier and more radiant through the enhancement of overall sound quality, various feature options, and the ability to customize the audio quality.

What are the Benefits of Sound Cards?

Sound cards improve the quality of sound in computers.  Therefore, any CDs, DVDs, and video games being played will be heavily improved in the sound department.  Sound cards also improve headphone capabilities.

How do Sound Cards Work?

Sounds are known to be analog, which means they are comprised of waves.  Because computers communicate by digital means, the waves must be converted to digital waves for the computer to understand them, and digital waves must be converted to analog for us to hear them.  This is done through sound cards.  The sound card works as a converter between our analog sound waves and the computer’s digital properties.

Advanced sound cards work to speed up the sound waves and enhance the sound quality.  Today, people buy sound cards to be able to improve the overall sound quality, choose from various modes and customize audio features.

Special Features of Sound Cards

Some sound cards have features in addition to the basics that may be  advantageous:

  • The DSP, or digital signal processor, is a device microprocessor that helps the computer’s CPU by doing some if its work for it.   The DSP speeds up the sound process, is able to process multiple sounds at once, and improves the overall audio process.
  • Memory is helpful in the overall efficacy of sound cards.
  • Input and output connections are desirable features of sound cards because they allow connections to various other hardware devices, such as microphones, speakers, a breakout box and USB connections.
