AT&T U-Verse Launches in Birmingham

AT&T has launched its AT&T U-verse and AT&T High Speed Internet services in Birmingham, Alabama, and plans to expand these services to more homes in the Birmingham region in 2009. The deployment of AT&T U-verse is rapidly introducing competitive choice and next-generation services to consumers.
"Today's launch of AT&T U-verse represents the fulfillment of our commitment to bring consumers in Alabama a new era of true video competition," said Fred McCallum, president of AT&T Alabama. "Alabama consumers have asked for choices in their video services and today the company is delivering."
AT&T Offers 100 Percent IP-Based Television (IPTV)
AT&T’s U-verse TV and High Speed Internet services are delivered over the company's advanced Internet Protocol (IP) network which allow for feature-rich services with advanced capabilities. IP technology combines a customer’s television, broadband, and wireless services — all on one bill — with unique features that provide a new level of integration, convenience, and control.
AT&T U-verse TV Features More Than 75 HD Channels
Where available, AT&T U-verse TV offerings include: a selection of TV packages with 100 percent digital programming featuring up to 350 channels, including digital music, local, movie, and sports programming, as well as premium Spanish-language and international packages.
All packages include HD-capable equipment, and most packages include an HD-capable digital video recorder (DVR); AT&T U-verse Total Home DVR, which allows recording standard or high definition programs from a single DVR on any connected TV in a home; and an extensive lineup of more than 75 HD channels. U-verse TV supports both 720p and 1080i formats; and the ability to set a DVR from any location and record up to four programs at once.
AT&T U-verse High-Speed Internet with More Bandwidth and 18 Mbps Speeds
AT&T U-verse High Speed Internet offers more bandwidth and faster available speeds and includes five package options: Max 18 with downstream speeds up to 18.0 Mbps, upstream speeds up to 1.5 Mbps; Max: with downstream speeds up to 10.0 Mbps, upstream speeds up to 1.5 Mbps; Elite with downstream speeds up to 6.0 Mbps, upstream speeds up to 1.0 Mbps; Pro with downstream speeds up to 3.0 Mbps, upstream speeds up to 1.0 Mbps; and Express with downstream speeds up to 1.5 Mbps, upstream speeds up to 1.0 Mbps.
All AT&T U-verse High Speed Internet packages include wireless home networking at no extra cost, and access to the nation's largest Wi-Fi network with free unlimited connectivity at more than 17,000 hot spot locations.
Comcast Rolls Out Wideband to Atlanta

As part of the company’s plan to bring wideband Internet to 10 major markets in 2008, Comcast has launched next-generation DOCSIS 3.0 wideband to residential homes and businesses in Atlanta’s Allen County and the city of Huntington. Comcast plans to complete the Atlanta rollout in 2009.
Comcast’s Wideband High-Speed Internet Tiers
Comcast’s wideband tier offerings: Extreme 50, with up to 50 Mbps downstream speed and up to 10 Mbps upstream speed; and Ultra, offering up to 22 Mbps downstream speed and up to 5 Mbps upstream speed.
Because of Extreme 50 Internet speeds, Comcast customers can download an HD movie in about 16 minutes, a standard-definition movie in about five minutes, and a standard-definition TV show in seconds. Extreme 50 customers will also be able to download digital photos, songs, and games faster than ever.
Existing Comcast Customers Will See Internet Speed Increases
In addition to the new speed tiers, Comcast also is increasing speeds for most of its existing customers. Performance tier customers will benefit from doubled downstream and upstream speeds. Performance Plus customers will be upgraded to Comcast’s Blast! tier, which will also double their download and upload speeds. Plus, PowerBoost technology enables customers to access even faster speeds to download and upload files such as videos, games, music, and photos.
Comcast Business Class Wideband Speed Tiers
With wideband, Comcast business customers will enjoy increased efficiency and productivity. The Deluxe 50 Mbps / 10 Mbps tier includes a full suite of features and support. As part of their service, Comcast Business Class customers receive Microsoft Communication Services, providing corporate-class e-mail, calendars, and document sharing, as well as firewall protection, static IP addresses, multiple e-mail addresses, and business class 24/7 customer support.
Comcast’s current business class customers also will receive complimentary speed increases. Speeds on the Starter tier will be doubled to up to 12 Mbps/2 Mbps, and a new Premium tier will be introduced offering speeds up to 22 Mbps/5 Mbps.
Comcast Launches MLB Network in New England

Comcast has added the MLB Network to its digital cable lineup in New England, enabling baseball fans to follow America's national pastime year-round.
The new MLB Network, which debuted January 1 to more than 50 million homes nationwide, offers baseball fans a full menu of baseball news and entertainment including pre-season deal-making, spring training, live game coverage, and daily analysis of the league and its teams. In its inaugural year, the channel will offer more than 1,400 hours of live programming, including at least 26 of baseball's best match-ups.
Hazel Mae Returns to New England on MLB Network
Of special interest to New England sports fans, the launch will also bring former NESN reporter Hazel Mae back to television in the region. Mae will report for the MLB Network program “Hot Stove,” a live off-season studio show featuring news, reports, and analysis of the moves various teams make as well as the planning and preparation for the upcoming season. Mae will also be featured on “MLB Tonight,” the network's premiere live in-season studio show that will air each night.
MLB Network Most Recent Addition to Comcast Offerings
MLB Network is the latest addition to the Comcast digital cable service, which features hundreds of channels along with more than 10,000 On Demand programs over the course of a month -- the vast majority for no additional charge -- including over 1,000 high definition viewing choices at any time.

Charter Communications Adds MLB Network

Charter Communications added the Major League Baseball (MLB) Network to the digital portion of its expanded basic line-up as of January 1. Twenty-six regular season game telecasts are scheduled to be aired during the baseball season on the Network.
"We feel MLB Network will add a significant amount of value to our line-up and increase our customers' enjoyment of Charter's video service," commented Rich DiGeronimo, vice president of product management for Charter. "We listen to our customers, and access to MLB Network has been high on their list. Our ability to deliver America's national pastime in this way further elevates the value of Charter's home entertainment services."
MLB Network Offers Wide Variety of Programming
As Major League Baseball's first 24-hour channel, the network offers in-season and off-season programming. MLB Network is set to provide over 1,400 hours of live shows, including “MLB Tonight” which airs six to seven hours a day during the baseball season.
In-season, the network will carry mostly live programming, covering stories across the entire league, while the off-season programming will focus more on archival programming. Its new “Hot Stove” show will air five nights a week to catch fans up on all the speculated trades, roster changes, managerial changes, and off-season awards.
“30 Clubs in 30 Days,” a special series which will air during baseball's spring training sessions, will feature a different MLB club during each of the 30 days, focusing on the upcoming season and the status of the team and its players.

Time Warner Cable and Viacom Reach Agreement in Principle

Time Warner Cable and Viacom jointly announced that the two companies have reached an agreement in principle for Time Warner to continue to air Viacom’s MTV Networks on all of its cable systems. The companies plan to finalize the details of the agreement over the next several days.
Agreement Reached Despite Viacom Ads
The agreement comes following a spate of print media ads from Viacom suggesting its channels had been pulled from Time Warner Cable service. Due to the timing of the agreement and the New Year's Day holiday, Viacom was unable to pull the ads from in New York, Cleveland, Orlando, Dallas, and Raleigh.
