Deploying Wi-Fi in the Gulf Region |
After the devastation to the gulf coast regions from two horribly powerful hurricanes, the coastal cities that were hit hard are trying to put themselves back together in more ways than one. It will be a slow process of rebuilding the cities and the communication networks. Because all phone and Internet networks were also taken out by the disasters, companies such as BellSouth, Cingular, and Sprint Nextel are lending a helping hand by donating and raising money in an effort to get communications services, such as wireless Internet connections, back up and running. Efforts Being Made to Deploy Wi-Fi Along the Gulf CoastCompanies are donating money and equipment in efforts to get these wireless Internet services up and running as quickly as possible. Internet services are important to emergency workers, relief efforts, communication in shelters and among people trying to locate family and friends. BellSouth has donated between $400 and $600 million towards the recovery efforts; technological companies such as Intel, Alvarion, and Tropos Networks have donated WiMAX technology to try and get a Wi-Fi connection working; various Internet service providers have been donating equipment; and both Cingular and Sprint Nextel have set up their customers’ phones so that they will be able to donate toward the relief efforts directly through their phone bills by pressing a few numbers on their keypads. The Benefits of Wireless Technology During Times of DisasterWireless technology, such as wireless Internet, is easy and fast to deploy and can be incredibly beneficial during times of disaster. Because it can be set up quickly, people affected by the disaster and those involved in the relief efforts can use this means of communication when they most need it. Wireless Internet also means access to VoIP services, which allow people to make phone calls over the wireless network. Wireless companies and technological companies are hoping that wireless networks, such as Wi-Fi will be further recognized, appreciated, and used after seeing how they work and help in times of need. |
