Google Wi-Fi is a Possibility in the future

Google officials have announced their plans to establish a Wi-Fi connection for people everywhere, but they are trying it out in San Francisco first.  They are currently working on equipping the entire city of San Francisco with a free 300 Kpbs wireless Internet connection.  As a pre-test run, the free of charge Google Wi-Fi is already offered in Bryant Park, of New York City, and in select spots in Mountain View, CA.

How Google Wi-Fi Began

Google engineers are all involved in the “20 Percent Time Project.”  This project persuades employees to spend 20 percent of their workday focusing on an independent project and brainstorming new ideas.  One employee developed the plan of Google Wi-Fi, and the company ran with it.

Google was especially excited about this project because it will allow everyone an opportunity to have access to the Internet, even those that cannot afford it.  It’s their newest community outreach project of the year.

Building Google Wi-Fi

Google is working with a San Diego company called WFI to build San Francisco’s network.  WFI is a cellular company that builds networks all over the world.

Since Google Wi-Fi is going to be free for residents and visitors of San Francisco, Google is going to rely on advertising to pay for the venture.  However, the type of advertising they will promote may be something that the typical PC user does not want a part of.  When you use Google Wi-Fi, Google has the means of being able to distribute ads to your computer or your cell phone.  Does this hinder the safety and security elements that we value?  No one has answers just yet.  We’ll find out all of the details, success levels, and opinions about Google Wi-Fi after the test city of San Francisco has been completely wired and functional.
