The World of WiFi Continues to Expand

WiFi (Wireless Fidelity) broadband Internet connections are becoming more and more prevalent in heavily populated locations. The benefits of having a WiFi Internet connection are obvious; WiFi broadband does not require a physical connection of any kind in order to access the Internet. As a result, Internet users are afforded a great deal more freedom than ever in terms of high speed connectivity. Laptop users are able to fully appreciate the benefits associated with WiFi connectivity because they are mobile computers. Take your laptop anywhere within WiFi signal range and remain connected to high speed broadband Internet

The most common places you might come across a WiFi hotspot:

  • Hotels
  • Libraries
  • Coffee shops
  • Airports

Most major airports are beginning to offer people a WiFi connection so they can access high speed Internet. One of the most recent airports to embrace WiFi technology is the Las Vegas Airport.

Las Vegas Airport & WiFi

Las Vegas’ McCarran Airport (one of the 15 busiest airports in the world) is the largest airport in the country to offer free WiFi Internet services to travelers. Although many large-scale public venues throughout Las Vegas (like the Las Vegas Convention Center) offer WiFi services, it is usually provided by a third party service and they charge an extra fee. Las Vegas airport offers free WiFi in an effort to give a little something back to travelers who are forced to endure long waits and delays.

The Las Vegas airport WiFi service is operated through 21 antennas that are spread throughout the McCarran facility, covering some 90(+)% of the airport’s public areas. The WiFi service is provided by Aruba Wireless Networks of Sunnyvale, California. In addition to affording travelers the luxury of having a high speed WiFi Internet connection, the McCarran system is also designed to help travelers with ticketing, baggage concerns, etc.

McCarran Airport considered charging travelers for their WiFi service in a similar fashion to other regional airports, however, they couldn’t generate a revenue plan that they deemed fair. Airports that offer WiFi service at a price usually do so at the rate of $6 - $10 per connection, or for a monthly charge of $30 - $60.
