Home Videos May Soon be Available with Comcast On Demand

As Web video sites, such as YouTube, continue to gain popularity on the Internet, Comcast Corporation, the nation’s largest communications company, vies to get into the game. How? According to the Wall Street Journal, Comcast has talked with some of the largest Web video sites, including YouTube, about adding individually produced video, or “user generated content”, to their Video on Demand menu. This move comes as competition stiffens throughout the interactive communications industry. In addition to talking with established user content outlets, the company is considering developing its own service for soliciting and displaying user materials.

Comcast Home Video On Demand – the Ins and Outs

The Wall Street Journal reported that Comcast plans to organize user content, which covers every imaginable subject, in video-on-demand genres. The company will also sponsor contests for each genre. Viewers will be able use Comcast’s On Demand menu to search and choose the content they want to watch. Comcast is already featuring a similar option with Dating on Demand, a service where viewers can view videos of area singles looking to date.

Comcast’s Other Interactive Additions

In addition to considering Home Video on Demand, Comcast is planning to add user content to its Web portal, www.comcast.net, adding to the sites library of music videos, movie trailers, and other video options. Comcast is also working to develop other interactive initiatives, such as a Web based TV guide to help subscribers sort through TV and On Demand listings.
