Skype Offers Limited Free International Calling |

Skype, an Internet communications company, is offering financial relief to its customers with its summer promotion, “Skype Days of Summer.” This offer allows customers to make free international calls to Mexico and Japan during specified week-ends from the United States and Canada. This promotion is in response to research showing that Mexico and Japan are two of the three most popular international calling destinations from the U.S and Canada. (The United Kingdom is the third popular calling destination and the U.K was previously included in the promotion). The Promotion DetailsFree SkypeOut calling to Mexico and Japan is available weekends July 22-23 and July 29-30, respectively. The free international SkypeOut calling offer to each country runs 48 hours from 12:01 a.m. EDT Saturdays through Sundays at midnight EDT, when international calling is at a peak. In a press release issued earlier this month, Don Albert, general manager, Skype North America stated, “This free international calling offer is yet another way Skype is making it easy and affordable for people in the U.S. and Canada to try Skype and discover the benefits of being able to easily stay in touch with friends and family all over the world.” Skype CallingSkype Voice services are not designed as a permanent telephone replacement and do not allow for emergency calling; however, Skype officials have found that 70 percent of its users rely on the service to stay in touch with friends and family abroad, to make inexpesive landline and mobile calls and free calling to other Skype users worldwide. In addition, of Skype users surveyed, nearly 25% use Skype to make 100% of their international calls. 30% of users state their friends are “spread around the globe.” Skype, an Ebay company, allows unlimited voice and video communication for free between the users of Skype software. The service is available in 27 languages and is used in almost every country around the world. Skype generates revenue through its premium offerings such as making and receiving calls to and from landline and mobile phones, voicemail, call forwarding and personalization including ringtones and avatars. Skype also has relationships with a growing network of hardware and software providers. |
