Comcast Invests in P2P Video-Delivery Startup

May 21, 2008

Comcast Corporation has entered into a strategic relationship with GridNetworks, a startup company that provides peer-to-peer (P2P) Internet video delivery services. Comcast plans to improve the efficiency of P2P on its Internet service provider networks through its use of the startup’s GridCasting service.

Seattle-based GridNetworks has developed technology which allows media companies to cost effectively and reliably stream full-screen, HD quality video content over the Internet. The company’s GridCasting service enables HD video for mass-audiences that will deliver a high-quality viewer experience, enhance content monetization, and deliver video in a way that is friendly and efficient on the broadband ISP's network.

GridNetworks Can Meet Broadband Service Providers’ Technical Requirements

"GridNetworks has built a delivery platform in conjunction with a managed service that can specifically meet the business and technical requirements of both media companies and broadband service providers for SD and HD content," said Tony Naughtin, president and chief executive officer of GridNetworks.

Comcast Working with Several Tech Companies to Improve P2P

"The collaborative discussions with GridNetworks are timely as we are working hard with a number of technology companies and other leaders in the field to improve the efficiency of P2P on ISP networks. We are interested in the application of P2P concepts in a manner that puts the quality of the consumer experience first, and enables lawful distribution of copyrighted content while also efficiently utilizing the network," said Tony Werner, Comcast’s chief technology officer. "GridNetworks has experience in this area and will have valuable contributions as we set out to solve these issues together with the Internet community."
