FCC Commissioner to Hold DTV Transition Meeting in Phoenix

December 26, 2008

By Mike Peters

FCC Commissioner Jonathan Adelstein will hold a public town hall meeting in Phoenix to address issues concerning the federally-mandated digital television (DTV) transition that will go into effect in February. The meeting will be held at the end of the month and is part of an extensive nationwide tour focusing on markets with high levels of over-the-air television viewers – that is, viewers who depend on set-top or roof-top antennas to receive their television signals.

FCC Town Hall Meetings Address DTV Transition for Over-the-Air Viewers

The FCC identified target television markets for specific DTV outreach, including all those markets in which more than 100,000 households or at least 15 percent of the households rely solely on over-the-air signals for television reception. The five FCC Commissioners and senior Commission staff will visit these and other markets to raise awareness and educate consumers in the days leading up to the DTV transition on February 17, 2009.

FCC Reaches Out to Ensure DTV Readiness for all Television Viewers

To ensure that all consumers have access to the latest telecommunications systems no matter where they live, Commissioner Adelstein has strived to improve universal service. He has also encouraged broadcasters to use the digital transition to better serve their communities with local, public affairs, and other cultural and educational programming. He has advocated for a substantive national broadband strategy with aggressive goals and specific policy recommendations. He also has played an active role at the Commission in promoting new policies that improve access to spectrum by both large and small companies so that consumers can continue to maintain those connections in an increasingly portable world.
