Americans consume broadband technology at amazing rate
September 14, 2009
Consumer gadgets from mobile phones to computers and game consoles reveal something fundamental about Americans. This is a country of techies on the go, who love their broadband internet and expect new devices to be as fast as they are.
Over the next five years, nearly 39 million U.S. households will get their first high-definition TV set and more than 30 million homes will add network connectivity to link up their TVs with their broadband internet connections, according to a survey from Forrester Research.
Improving connectivity is not just for the home, where Americans average two computers per household and 54 percent of households have a laptop. Mobile devices like iPhones, smartphones and other cell phones are part of the picture, too. More than 80 percent of U.S. homes have at least one mobile phone.
The tech trend should only grow in the coming years, as younger Americans are more tech-friendly than their parents. On average, consumers younger than 40 spend almost two hours a week more with new media like broadband internet than they do with traditional media, such as radio and TV.
"U.S. consumers are making an inexorable transition to an all-digital, internet-powered world," said Forrester Research analyst Charles Golvin. "The internet pervades all aspects of Americans' lives."
