Clearwire launches 4G mobile broadband in 10 markets

September 1, 2009

Clearwire officially launched its 4G WiMax service in 10 new markets today, expanding the mobile broadband internet service area to a total of 14 markets and over 10 million people.

Consumers in eight markets in Texas, in Bellingham, Washington and in Boise, Idaho can now get wireless internet access at true broadband speeds.

Mike Sievert, chief commercial officer for Clearwire, said WiMAX provides "a valuable new category of internet service," with mobile broadband internet experience on par with speeds typically experienced only on wired connections like DSL.

WiMax customers can expect to see average download speeds of 3 to 6 mbps with bursts over 10 mbps.

Clearwire's fortunes have come into question of late, as the company has sought funding from the broadband stimulus and yesterday announced a shuffling of its top executives. Company CEO Bill Morrow announced the replacement of the chief financial officer.

Broadband internet providerComcast has licensed the WiMax technology for offering mobile broadband to its high speed internet subscribers in Portland, Oregon, Atlanta, Baltimore and Las Vegas.

Mobile carriers AT&T and Verizon Wirless are supporting a rival 4G mobile broadband technology called Long term Evolution, or LTE.
