FCC chief Genachowski lays out broad strokes of broadband plan
October 7, 2009
The chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, Julius Genachowski, said today that he foresees a time of crisis for wirelessbroadband access and used his speech at the CTIA conference in San Diego to outline some of his ideas for defusing such a crisis.
Referring to spectrum as "the oxygen of our mobile networks," Genachowski proposed a broad expansion of the radio frequency spectra available for use by mobile voice and data providers. While he was careful to note that the reassignment of radio frequencies takes years to fully accomplish, Genachowski was emphatic in his assertion that the country had "no choice" but to do so.
The FCC chair also took the opportunity to promote the net neutrality proposals currently making their way through Congress and under consideration by the FCC. Genachowski said that wireless and wired technologies combined and running an open internet would foster growth around the world, according to Sam Diaz at ZDnet.
Genachowski's thoughts on the open spectrum come days after announcements by AT&T to allow Google Voice onto its 3G network and Verizon's partnership with Google, which the FCC chair made special note of in his speech.
