Online app makers great and small stand to gain from net neutrality
September 28, 2009
Whether a mid-sized company like VoIP provider Skype or a corporate titan like Google, firms in the business of providing applications and services over the internet would benefit hugely from net neutrality laws heading towards realization in the U.S.
The debate over net neutrality largely boils down to two opposing viewpoints, Skype lobbyists told the Washington Post. First, the giant telecom companies whose core business has shifted from providing phone service to providing internet connections, and second, the online creators of web applications and free services whose core business depends on unfettered access to web content.
The telecom companies assert that they have a right to block or restrict traffic on their networks, but the web content providers say that this is an unfair and anti-competitive practice.
The debate has taken on renewed urgency in recent weeks, due in part to news that both legislative and regulatory action was afoot to strengthen net neutrality provisions in law, and due to the massive spike in wireless internet traffic that has some networks sagging under the strain.
