Verizon launches trial of TV over broadband internet
August 28, 2009
Verizon has launched a trial to bring television programming online to its FiOS TV subscribers, as part of an initiative by cable internet providers called TV Everywhere, allowing customers to view cable TV content wherever and whenever they want it.
Comcast and Time Warner announced the TV Everywhere concept in June and last month set up a trial to share Time Warner cable content with subscribers of Comcast high speed internet, called On Demand Online.
The Comcast trial has since expanded to include content such as HBO, Starz and CBS programming.
For Verizon, the company said offering TV content over Verizon high speed internet makes it the leader in multi-screen viewing. The online trial for FiOS customers will initially include Time Warner programming from TNT and TBS.
Trial participants will be able to watch the programs on their personal computers or laptops using any broadband connection. Using their Verizon Online user names and passwords, participating FiOS TV customers will be able to access the online programming at the networks' websites.
