Yahoo whoops it up with new ad campaign
September 28, 2009
Going against the prevailing trend of decreased spending on internet advertisements, Yahoo on Tuesday introduced its new ad campaign. Its theme? "You," or as Yahoo would have it, "Y!ou."
The campaign aims to highlight Yahoo's increasing focus on personalized content and social media services, including the company's myriad of chat rooms and spaces for virtual interaction. CEO Carol Bartz said that Yahoo is "committed to being the center of people's lives online." This follows the lead of competitor Google, whose search and mail functions are highly customizable and geared for interactivity between users.
Yahoo's new ads will begin in less than a week, and will run for 15 months. Countries besides the U.S. in which ads will appear include France, Canada, Brazil, Hong Kong, Indonesia, South Korea, and Taiwan.
The new ad campaign could be seen as an attempt to re-brand the company's services after a systematic overhaul of some its flagship applications, including its free email service and instant messenger. Additionally, Yahoo recently reworked some aspects of its search engine in an attempt to provide more personalized results.
