Administration hopes to boost economy with broadband stimulus grants
February 27, 2009
Federal funding for expansion of broadband will be the subject of special meetings hosted by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) on Monday, March 2, 2009.
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, commonly referred to as the federal stimulus, directs the NTIA and the Department of Commerce to establish a broadband technology opportunities program to make grants available on a competitive basis to accelerate and expand broadband deployment.
Under the new administration, broadband expansion will be a major component of the economic recovery plan.
"Our nations economic success is tied directly to America continuing to lead in technology and innovation and in exporting those products, services and ideas to markets around the globe," said former Governor Gary Locke, the secretary designate of the commerce department. "The Department of Commerce can and will help create jobs and the economic vitality our country needs."
Interested parties will have the opportunity to discuss implementation of the broadband grant programs in the Broadband Data Services Improvement Act and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, according to a notice in the Federal Register.
Each meeting will be placed on the public record.
