AT&T and Verizon go head-to-head with mobile TV offers
June 22, 2009
Verizon Wireless said Monday that it will offer live mobile TV over its V CAST Mobile TV service in four additional markets, some of which have direct competition from AT&T Mobile TV.
AT&T said Monday it has expanded the availability of its mobile TV to roughly 20 new markets around the country.
AT&T Mobile TV and Verizon's V CAST Mobile TV both run on a multicast network maintained by FLO TV, a Qualcomm company. The shift to DTV on June 12 released spectrum enabling FLO TV to expand its network coverage nationwide.
New markets in the AT&T Mobile TV footprint include Boston, Charlotte, Cleveland, Houston, Miami, Milwaukee, Sacramento and San Francisco, in addition to cities in Connecticut, Florida, New Jersey, North Carolina and the Northeast. The expansion brings the service to a total of more than 80 markets.
Unlimited access to AT&T Mobile TV is availablefor $15 per month. Because AT&T Mobile TV runs on a separate, dedicated network, users do not incur additional voice or data charges. It is available on four handsets from LG and Samsung.
With V CAST Mobile TV, Verizon customers can use their same phones to access full-length simulcast and time-shifted programming from top entertainment brands, for rates from $13 to $25 per month.
