AT&T announces 35 new cell tower sites in Indiana
March 26, 2009
As part of an ongoing expansion of its 3G wireless broadband network, AT&T said it plans to add more than 35 new cell sites in Indiana this year.
The investment is part of AT&T's effort to build the broadband networks that will create jobs and fuel economic growth in the state, the company said in its announcement.
"I applaud companies who invest to better the quality of life for Hoosiers," said Indiana Congressman Steve Buyer. "Indiana continues to have one of the best pro-market environments in the nation for investment by the telecommunications industry. Indiana deregulated the telecommunications industry and is now the leader and envy of other states."
Buyer, a senior member of the House telecommunications and internet subcommittee, added that Indiana is a mainly rural state that still needs to improve its wireless infrastructure.
George S. Fleetwood, president of AT&T Indiana, said the state's telecommunications deregulation led to more capital investment in the state by the company, which from 2006 to 2008 totaled more than $1 billion.
AT&T has added more than 90 new cell sites and upgraded technology at an additional more than 20 sites to improve in-building coverage and enhance voice quality and data speeds, the company said.
