AT&T announces satellite TV for vehicle video systems
June 3, 2009
A new service announced today by AT&T would allow subscribers to receive satellite TV and radio for rear-seat entertainment systems in cars, trucks and SUVs. Called CruiseCast, the service is available in the continental U.S. and offers 42 channels of content for a monthly rate.
The system requires a small pod-like antenna that affixes to the roof of vehicles. The antenna is paired with a receiver that is mounted in the vehicle and provides all video and audio connections to the appropriate vehicle systems, such as rear seat entertainment and vehicle audio systems.
Total cost of the equipment (antenna and receiver) is $1299 and the monthly subscription fee is $28, AT&T said.
AT&T, which developed the CruiseCast technology with RaySat Broadcasting Corporation (RBC), said the service is available through a nationwide network of authorized installers and car retail outlets.
Winston Guillory Jr., president of RBC, said in-vehicle satellite entertainment is "the next major trend in consumer electronics. We are proud to deliver a robust live-TV experience to vehicles."
Available channels include Discovery, CNN mobile, NFL Network, ESPN mobile and Cartoon Network mobile.
The programming lineup also includes five additional video channels that are favorites among young children, "tweens" and teenagers.
