AT&T expanding netbook offerings
May 20, 2009
AT&T will offer an expanded line-up of embedded 3G mini laptops this summer, including netbooks from Acer, Dell and Lenovo, the company announced today.
The company said it began selling netbooks at some of its 2,200 retail stores this April and due to successful results will expand the availability of mini laptops through its nationwide stores and website.
Mini laptops or netbooks are lightweight computers that are designed for surfing the internet, email, reviewing and editing documents and managing digital files, including photos and music.
"Sleek, mobile and fast is all the rage and we're going to answer that call with a lineup of the hottest mini laptops in the market," said Ralph de la Vega, president and chief executive officer, AT&T mobility and consumer markets.
AT&T's home broadband, WiFi, and 3G network enables consumers and small business customers to use the popular new devices at home, in the office and on the go, de la Vega said.
He added that AT&T's test marketing at stores in Atlanta and Philadelphia showed netbook popularity isn't limited to a specific demographic and customers "really seem to be attracted to the convenience and portability of this connected device."
Market analysts have forecast that by year end 2009, worldwide shipments of mini laptops could reach 22 million.
