AT&T to discontinue CallVantage internet phone service
April 23, 2009
AT&T said Wednesday that it will be discontinuing its CallVantage Internet-based phone service, which will be replaced by its U-verse combined TV, internet and phone service, according to BizJournals.com.
CallVantage offered unlimited local and long-distance calls over a broadband internet connection, but the company said it will phase out all of its CallVantage customer accounts by the end of the year, according to BizJournals.com.
The company will instead focus on expanding its AT&T U-verse Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service. VoIP allows the company to offer digital television, broadband internet and voice services all on a single platform.
AT&T expanded its U-verse triple-play $30-$30-$30 promotional offer to all U-verse TV markets. The offer includes U-verse TV, U-verse High Speed Internet and U-verse Voice Unlimited for $30 for each service for 12 months when customers subscribe online.
"We're focused on delivering a better experience than cable," said Jeff Weber, vice president of video services for AT&T.
AT&T said Wednesday that subscriber additions in the first quarter increased the U-verse TV subscriber total above 1.3 million. U-verse TV is now available in 93 markets across 19 states.
