ATT, Verizon still building out 3G mobile broadband networks
August 24, 2009
With all of the attention on products like WiMax that promise fourth-generation (4G) mobile broadband, consumers might not realize that companies like Verizon and AT&T are still spending billions of dollars to complete their 3G mobile broadband networks.
AT&T today announced the activation of five new cell sites in Surprise and Sun City West that will enhance coverage for residents and businesses in the Phoenix area. Meanwhile, Verizon has added three additional cell sites for 3G access in the greater San Francisco Bay area.
Jerry Fuentes, president of AT&T Arizona-New Mexico, said the company is continuing to expand its mobile broadband to address the growing demand for advanced wireless data products and services. With 3G speeds, customers can not only surf the web and download files faster than ever on their mobile devices, but they can also experience the very latest interactive mobile applications such as live video sharing and remote home monitoring.
Verizon Wireless said it invested more than $684 million in California during 2008 to enhance service and 3G coverage. Nationally, the company has invested more than $50 billion in its network since it was formed in 2000.
Naturally, both companies say they have the fastest 3G network.
