Broadband coalition applauds Alabama law
April 14, 2009
A proposed law that has passed the Alabama state senate would boost the adoption of broadband high speed internet by encouraging greater choice and competition among telecommunications companies, a move applauded by a nonprofit supporter of improved broadband access.
Citizens for a Digital Future, a national coalition that supports public policies that encourage broad deployment, transparency and robust enhancement of broadband and digital technologies, said it commends the passage of the Communications Modernization and Lifeline Improvement Act.
The bill encourages Alabama consumers to adopt and use Lifeline and Link-up, which help pay for consumers feeling the financial crunch to stay connected, according to the organization.
"Broadband technology has become critically important to the environment, education, health care and economic development, and all Alabama citizens deserve accessto the benefits provided by broadband technologies, said John Watson, chairman of Citizens for a Digital Future.
In these difficult economic times, many Alabama families are feeling the financial crunch, Watson added. It is crucial to strengthen these programs that help pay for more families to stay connected.
Watson said consumers stand to benefit from greater choice and competition created by the bill. Additionally, passage of the bill into law could make the state more attractive for new investment and new jobs.
