Broadband industry buzzes about competing conventions
March 31, 2009
April 1st marks the starting date for two competing but interconnected conventions in the broadband industry, with cable and wireless service providers gathering in Washington, DC and Las Vegas for big trade shows.
The buzz ahead of the CTIA Wireless 2009 convention in Vegas involves new mobile apps from Microsoft, Google, Research In Motion and others as handset and software companies attempt to catch up with the popularity of Apples iPhone apps.
RIM is expected to announce that its BlackBerry AppWorld is open to consumers and Microsoft will unveil its own apps on Marketplace.
Meanwhile, the Cable Show '09 in Washington will try to drum up excitement over the cable industrys newest breakthroughs in interactive and web television products.
EchoStar Technologies and Sling Media unveiled the EchoStar T2200S, the world's first SlingLoaded, tru2way-based, multi-tuner, HD DVR set-top box designed specifically for the cable TV industry.
The box allows cable TV subscribers to watch their home TV, including live TV, DVR and video on-demand content on almost any internet-connected device, such as PCs, Macs, mobile media players or mobile phones.
Industry observers noted that the economic downturn has taken some of the excitement out of the conventions. But the new technologies being displayed spotlight an industry that is one of the bright spots of the economy.
