Broadband internet subscriber rate slowest in 8 years
August 18, 2009
New broadband internet subscribers in the second quarter dropped down to the lowest level in eight years, according to a research report from Leichtman Research Group (LRG).
LRG found that the 19 largest cable and telephone providers in the U.S. - representing about 93 percent of the market - acquired just 634,000 net additional high speed internet subscribers in the second quarter of 2009.
This pace was only about 70 percent of the net broadband additions in 2Q 2008, with telecoms having 178 percent more additions a year ago and cable companies 37 percent more last year.
"The second quarter has proven to be traditionally weak for broadband growth, but with the market becoming more mature, broadband adds further waned in 2Q 2009," said Bruce Leichtman, president and principal analyst for LRG.
Among cable providers, Comcast added 64,000 to its base of more than 15.3 million broadband subscribers, while Time Warner added 94,000 to its 9 million broadband subscribers and Cox added 30,000 to its 4.1 million broadband subscribers in the quarter.
