Broadband internet takes you to the moon: Experience Apollo 11 with Google Earth
July 20, 2009
Through the power of a broadband internet connection, now anyone can experience the view of earth from the moon and see what the Apollo 11 astronauts saw 40 years ago when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin took a giant leap forward for mankind.
To witness 3D recreations of the inside of the Apollo 11 spacecraft and for guided tours of the lunar landing spot, broadband internet users just need to download Google Earth 5.0 (no upgrade required if you already have the latest version).
Click the planet button on the top toolbar of Google Earth and choose Moon. Once on the moon, drag your mouse on the globe to fly around and use the Layers panel to discover content. Take a guided tour narrated by Aldrin, or search the lunar surface on your own.
Each of the Apollo landing missions is chronicled in detail through pictures and stories, with embedded video and photos taken by the astronauts.
"This tool will make it easier for millions of people to learn about space, our moon and some of the most significant and dazzling discoveries humanity has accomplished together," said Anousheh Ansari, the first female private space explorer, in a post on the official Google blog.
