Broadband lifestyle: Twitter updates terms of service
September 14, 2009
Social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter have quickly become an integral part of the broadband internet lifestyle. More users go online daily at home or from mobile broadband devices to update their status and check on friends.
But as internet users get more accustomed to these services, concerns over privacy and security have come to the forefront. Facebook was forced to upgrade its privacy settings due to complaints from the government of Canada and Twitter has updated its terms of service (TOS) in an effort to stop abuses.
The Twitter TOS "are the basic rules that go along with using Twitter," CEO Biz Stone said on Twitter's blog last week. "The revisions more appropriately reflect the nature of Twitter and convey key issues such as ownership. For example, your tweets belong to you, not to Twitter."
Although the company makes it clear that a person's content belongs to them, Twitter made sure the revised TOS let users and abusers of the service know who's boss.
Stone left the door open for advertising on the Twitter site and put his foot down on people who send out spam or "squat" in Twitter accounts in an effort to make money by selling user names.
