August 31, 2009
Clearwire Corporation announced today a shuffling of its top executives as it tries to overcome problems in rolling out its 4G mobile broadband network, called WiMax, which promises much faster data speeds.
Company CEO Bill Morrow announced the appointment of two new members of the company's executive team and the departure of the chief financial officer. Joining Clearwire will be Erik Prusch as chief financial officer and Teresa Elder as president of strategic partnerships and wholesale.
David Sach, the former CFO, will leave the company to pursue "new opportunities," the company said.
Broadband provider Comcast has licensed the WiMax technology for offering mobile broadband to its high speed internet subscribers in Portland, Oregon, Atlanta, Baltimore and Las Vegas. Time WarnerCable has also expressed interest in licensing WiMax.
Clearwire said it plans to roll out WiMax in an additional 10 markets this year and to 80 markets covering up to 120 million people by the end of 2010.
The company is competing against wirelss carriers AT&T and Verizon Wireless, which plan to roll out a rival technology called Long Term Evolution (LTE).
Verizon tested a data call of LTE in Boston and Seattle earlier this month. Verizon is hoping to launch its LTE 4G mobile broadband network in 30 markets in 2010.
