Clearwire to launch WiMax mobile broadband in more markets
August 3, 2009
Clearwire today announced that it will launch its WiMax 4G mobile broadband internet service in Boise, Idaho; Bellingham, Washington; and eight markets throughout Texas on September 1, 2009.
WiMax is already available in four markets - Portland, Oregon, Atlanta, Baltimore and Las Vegas. The service delivers mobile broadband internet speeds on par with speeds typically experienced only on wired connections, like DSL.
For consumers, the rollout of Clearwire's 4G (fourth generation) WiMax could mean accessing 4G mobile speeds through other broadband internet service providers, like Comcast, which offers WiMax to its customers in Atlanta and Portland bundled with its high speed internet, voice and cable products.
Time Warner Cable has also indicated that it plans to purchase WiMax service for its broadband internet customers sometime this fall.
Clearwire said it plans to roll out WiMax in an additional 10 markets this year and to 80 markets covering up to 120 million people by the end of 2010.
Currently, most mobile broadband internet customers access the web on 3G networks, but next-generation technology will bring competing options from broadband internet and wireless providers.
Verizon and AT&T are both signed on for using LTE - Long Term Evolution - the 4G technology developed by telecommunications carriers that could bring mobile broadband speeds of up to 100 Mbps by 2010.
