Comcast adding Starz to On Demand Online trial
July 10, 2009
Comcast announced that it will be adding content from Starz movie channels to its trial of On Demand Online, which lets subscribers watch cable TV programming on the web through their broadband internet connection.
On Demand Online will initially make 300 movies and other original programming available to Starz subscribers in standard definition, with HD versions and more content added in coming months, Starz said.
Comcast's technical trial comes on the heels of last month's joint announcement between Time Warner Cable and Comcast, which introduced a set of principles called TV Everywhere, intended to facilitate deployment of television content across broadband internet.
Comcast will begin its technical trial of On Demand Online with approximately 5,000 customers from across the U.S. in the coming weeks. A major focus of the trial is to test authentication technology to allow customers to receive the same content online for free that they subscribe to on TV.
Starz movies that can be seen as part of the trial include films such as Hancock, Vantage Point, Wall-E, Pineapple Express and High School Musical 3: Senior Year. Original Starz series such as Crash, Head Case and Party Down will also be available.
The content will be accessible on Comcast.net and Fancast.com.
